What We Do
Overview:-
The Motor Vehicles Division is a constituent part of the Transport Department,
Government of Sikkim whose salient features are to enforce and implement the laws relating to
the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, Sikkim Motor Vehicle
Rules, 1991, the Sikkim Motor Vehicles (Taxation) Act, 1982 and enforcement of laws
governing the registration of motor vehicles, issue of driving licenses, permits, collection of
vehicle taxes etc. According to the Notification No 22/Home/2004, dated 3/3/2004, Government
of Sikkim (Allocation of Business) Rules, the Motor Vehicles Division has been entrusted with
the following business:
- Registration of motor vehicles.
- Issue of route permits to transport vehicles.
- Issue of driving licenses.
- Issue of fitness certificate.
- Collection of motor vehicle road tax.
- Meeting of State Transport Authority.
- Collection of Government revenue by way of various types of fees from vehicle owners.
- Recommendation of countersignature of permit to Sikkim based vehicles for plying in
West Bengal.
- Countersignature of permit to West Bengal public carriers and stage carriages/contract
carriages under Reciprocal Transport Agreement.
- All matters relating to Inter-State Transport Arrangement.
- Enforcement of provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, Central Motor Vehicles Rules,
1989, Sikkim Motor Vehicle Rules, 1991 and Sikkim Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1982.
- Control of all State Transport undertakings.
- Public service-statutory rules of the services with which the department is concerned.
- Transport Policy.
